What’s Your Purpose
About 10 years ago I attended a class taught by Andy Newberry. During the class Andy challenged us to start reading more books and to start a personal library so that we could reference and study from them. This was especially challenging to me seeing that I had probably read a total of 5 books in my entire life up to that point. I say all of that to say, I'm currently reading a book by author Rick Warren entitled The Purpose Driven Life.
If you haven't read it yet I would challenge you to do so. Warren starts out by asking what is our purpose on this earth. I started to think of several things while answering this question—be a good husband, father and provider. Then I thought about the importance of golf, softball and other activities that I enjoy as often as possible. So pretty much my purpose was all about me. So you can imagine my surprise when I read what the author had to say. Our purpose in life is to serve God.
We were created by God for God. Warren states that a life devoted to “things” is a dead life, a stump. A God shaped life is a flourishing tree. This was a difficult concept for me to grasp, just as it is for many of you who want to put yourselves in the middle of your purpose.
I ask that some time during this week you read Colossians 3 and make God the center of your PURPOSE on this earth. May God bless you in your Christian walk.
