“TAPS”

At some point in the morning sermon, you will hear the words of this famous melody. Since 1862 when it was composed in the midst of our Civil War, that great struggle for Freedom, “Taps” has been sounded at evening on our military bases as a call to “Extinguish Lights” or, more simply, it has been a “call to rest.” More often, that rest has been for a soldier at the end of life’s day.

John the Apostle and author of Revelation in chapter 14 verse 13 similarly calls us to rest at the end of life’s day. He gives us the blessed assurance that as we take our rest in Christ we will awake to a new and eternal dawn with the one who “loved us and gave himself for us.” That trust is beautifully expressed in the words of this song.
